Reviewer verdict

Across 31 YouTube reviews, the Sony STR-DH790 earns an Index score of 4.3/5, ranking #32 among AV Receivers. Reviewers most often praise its features, sound quality, connectivity, while the most common criticisms concern connectivity, build quality.

Reviewers consistently praise the Sony STR-DH790 for packing 7.2-channel Dolby Atmos and DTS:X support, high‑resolution audio and flexible multi‑speaker configurations, a feature set mentioned in over half of the pros. Many reviewers (dozens of mentions) also highlight strong sound quality and convincing Atmos/DTS:X immersion, with repeated comments that it noticeably improves movie and game audio. Connectivity options such as multiple HDMI inputs, Bluetooth and ARC/eARC support and straightforward setup with Sony’s auto calibration are frequently noted as strengths. Overall the consensus is that the receiver offers a powerful, easy‑to‑use home theater package with broad format and video passthrough support for its target users.

Criticisms cluster around connectivity and build limitations: reviewers commonly note missing network/Wi‑Fi, limited HDMI/evolving HDMI standards, rear USB that only supplies power, and occasional spotty Bluetooth, which together appeared in the largest share of cons. Build quality and speaker terminal design (spring clips for many channels, non‑removable power cord, sensitivity to wiring causing protect mode) are recurring complaints across many reviewers. Some also caution that the stated power figures are optimistic under full load and that channel/feature limits (seven channels, lack of 8K) constrain expansion. Price volatility and the expectation gap between budget positioning and certain design choices were mentioned but less frequently.
